A New Earth

We often refer to the gospel as “good news” for humanity, but is it also good news for the earth? The biblical story begins when God creates humanity in his image and calls them to represent him in creation and rule over the earth on his behalf (Gen 1:26-28).

God entrusts the care and cultivation of the earth to humanity but, by choosing to define good and evil on our own terms, we rebel against him and unleash death in the world.

Jesus came to redeem us from the consequences of our rebellion and to reconcile all of creation to God. As we follow him, Jesus transforms us into new humans who reflect God’s character the way we were made to.

Although our hope is not in our own ability to fix the planet, we are nevertheless called to be intentional in our care for the earth today as we await the promised day when Jesus returns to usher in a New Heaven and a New Earth (Rev 21:1-4).
